How much does a website cost in 2026?

Real price ranges for a business website or online store, what drives the price, and the recurring costs to plan for.

It’s often the first question we get, and the honest answer is: it depends. A website can cost $950 or $25,000. What drives the price isn’t a mystery, and once you understand it, comparing quotes and choosing the right option for your business gets much easier.

Price ranges in 2026

Pulling together the prices published by local agencies and freelancers gives roughly this picture (before taxes):

  • Small business website (5 to 10 pages): about $1,500 to $4,000 with a freelancer, and $4,000 to $9,000 with an agency.
  • Online store (WooCommerce or similar): from a few thousand dollars for a small catalogue, up to $8,000 to $30,000 with an agency for a more complete store.
  • Redesign of an existing site: often 40% to 70% of the price of a new site, depending on what can be reused.

These figures are benchmarks, not rules. Two “5-page” websites can have very different prices depending on what’s behind them.

What drives the price

1. Design: adapted template or custom

Starting from a template adapted to your colours and logo costs less than a design created from scratch for your brand. Both can look great. Custom design pays off when your image really needs to stand out from competitors.

2. Number of pages and content

Every page needs layout, images and text. If you supply your own text, the price goes down. If you’d rather have it written for your customers and for Google, that’s a separate service (with us, $150 per page).

3. Features

A contact form is simple. Online booking, a client area, a product catalogue or an integration with your business software add development and testing time.

4. Bilingual sites

Many businesses need a site in French and English. It’s more than a translation: you need two versions of every page, a language switcher and good search visibility in both languages. Expect roughly 30% to 40% more.

5. Basic SEO

A website that doesn’t show up on Google isn’t doing much for you. Page titles, descriptions, loading speed and page structure should be planned from the start, not added afterwards.

Recurring costs people forget

The build price is only the beginning. Also plan for:

  • Domain name: about $15 to $25 per year for a .ca.
  • Hosting: from a few dollars a month to several hundred a year for fast, managed hosting.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups and security. Plans typically range from $50 to $250 a month.

A business website often means a recurring budget of a few hundred to over a thousand dollars a year. That’s not bad news: it’s what keeps your site fast, secure and up to date.

Our prices, for comparison

At Avokado, we publish our prices. To give you an idea:

  • Landing page: $950
  • Starter Website (up to 5 pages): $2,400
  • Business Website (up to 10 pages, custom design, blog): $4,500
  • Essential Store (up to 25 products): $5,500
  • Maintenance: from $59 per month

All the details are on our Websites and Website maintenance pages.

How to compare two quotes

Before choosing, ask each provider:

  • How many revision rounds are included?
  • Who supplies the text and images?
  • Will the site be mobile-friendly and optimized for Google?
  • Will I own my website and my domain name?
  • What’s included after launch (training, warranty, maintenance)?

A lower quote that leaves out mobile, SEO and training often ends up costing more.

In short

For a small business, a realistic budget is often between $2,000 and $8,000 to build a business website, plus a yearly budget for hosting and maintenance. The right price is the one that matches what your website needs to do.
